Saying ”I do” with SPHMBO

Singapore, 29 July 2010 - To reach out to the out-of-home crowd, media planners and advertisers utilise SPH MediaBoxOffice’s large LED screens for their advertising campaigns. But for a marriage proposal?!

On a bustling Saturday evening along Orchard Road on July 10, Tan Wei Te selected the LED screen at Singapore Visitors Centre @ Orchard Road to propose to his girlfriend Yolanda.

On her way with friends to dinner, Yolanda was stopped and forced to interact with a costumed bunny in front of the Singapore Visitors Centre @ Orchard Road. After posing for pictures, the mascot gestured for her to look up at the screen. What followed was the screening of a 30 second animation clip of Wei Te’s proposal on the LED. Immediately following the clip, the bunny got on one knee, removed the costumed head to reveal Wei Te himself.

When asked why he decided to use the LED screen as part of his proposal, Wei Te said, “I wanted something different. Having been in the media line for some time, I am aware how the effective use of the different mediums can invoke certain emotions and thoughts, carrying across messages which one wants to convey very effectively without even uttering a single word.”

Was it effective? From the words of the groom-to-be himself, “Within that short 30 seconds of the clip she laughed, she cried, and even both at the same time nearing the end. I almost could not hold myself together at the end of the clip either when I went down on my knee, with my voice trembling, I asked her to marry me. She nodded and said yes."

When quizzed on her feelings after accepting the proposal, Yolanda said, “I never expected my proposal to be projected on a large LED screen and in the middle of Orchard Road! It really caught me by surprise and I was very touched by Wei Te’s declaration of love. It was a very brave move from him and I guess having family, friends and strangers on the street to witness and share that moment with us was truly memorable."
