Singapore, 7 October 2010 - Mr Lim Jim Koon, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, received the coveted Hsing Yun Journalism Award for his contributions to the Singapore Chinese community through his journalistic work. Lianhe Zaobao is the Chinese flagship newspaper published by leading media group Singapore Press Holdings.
This was the first time the Award was expanded to recognise journalists from countries outside of Taiwan including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Mr Lim was the sole Singapore winner. Other winners included Professor Zhang Guo Liang, Dean of School of Media and Design, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Mr Yau Lap Poon, Editor in Chief of Yazhou Zhoukan in Hong Kong and Datuk C.C Liew, Editorial Director of Sin Chew Media Corporation of Malaysia.
The Hsing Yun Journalism Award, established by the Venerable Master Hsing Yun Public Education Trust Fund in Taiwan, recognises outstanding achievements made by media professionals in delivering quality journalism and socially responsible news reports. The Award was first launched last year to recognise Taiwanese journalists.
The winners were picked by a selection committee consisting of community leaders from their respective countries. Each winner received a trophy and a cash award of NT$1 million (S$42,000).
Commenting on his award, Mr Lim said: "This is the first time that the award has been given to journalists outside Taiwan and as the Singaporean recipient, I see it as a tremendous affirmation of Lianhe Zaobao and of my work. Singapore is on the fringe of the Chinese cultural circle and lacks a natural environment for the Chinese language to thrive. It is a real challenge to produce a good and popular Chinese-language daily here. Hence, the recognition from Taiwan, which is steeped in Chinese culture, is particularly gratifying. But the honour, I feel, should go to Zaobao which has provided me with the platform to pursue my journalistic career, put my ideas into practice and fulfil my dreams."
Mr Lim will be donating his cash award to Lianhe Zaobao.
