SPH took top spots in Nielsen Media Index 2010

Singapore, 22 October 2010 – Singapore Press Holdings Limited ("SPH") has once again proved its prowess as the leading media company with a good showing in the Nielsen Media Index 2010 survey.

The latest annual Media Index report from The Nielsen Company released today showed SPH’s stable of multimedia platforms, including newspapers, online portals, magazines and radio, garnering strong support from Singaporeans. SPH's flagship newspapers, The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, continued to lead the pack, while SPH Magazines' Her World stayed on top in its category.

Overall, newspapers continued to do well, with seven in 10 people reading newspapers on a daily basis. SPH’s English flagship newspaper,
The Straits Times, maintained its lead as Singapore’s highest read daily newspaper with 36 per cent readership. The survey results also showed that three in five PMEBs (professionals/managers/executives/businessmen) read The Straits Times.

The New Paper remained stable at 13 per cent, with two in five readers from the younger group aged 15 - 29. The Business Times reached 3 per cent, with four in five readers who were PMEBs. My Paper also remained stable at 9 per cent.

Overall readership figures for Chinese newspapers remained stable, with SPH’s Chinese flagship,
Lianhe Zaobao, topping the list with 15 per cent readership. Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao were he second and third most read Chinese newspapers, respectively.

Vernacular titles
Berita Harian and Tamil Murasu also continued to do well, with Tamil Murasu registering an increase in its readership.

The digital version of The Straits Times,, gained more weekly readers to reach 6 per cent in readership, while the readership of the digital versions of other titles such as Lianhe Zaobao, The New Paper, The Business Times and My Paper all remained stable.

SPH Magazines Pte Ltd ("SPH Magazines"), a fully-owned subsidiary of SPH, retained its position as the Publisher of Choice in the magazines industry with its publications clinching several top spots.

Its flagship title,
Her World, saw an impressive increase in its readership to 246,000, which further confirmed its position as Singapore’s No. 1 Women’s Magazine. Her World celebrated its 50th anniversary this year with a series of promotions and events, including introducing the mobile Her World Glass House which engaged the public at various locations around the island.

Another publication,
Female, with year-on-year increases in readership, was the second most read women’s magazine, with a new readership of 158,000.

The readership for
Men's Health also increased to a new high of 114,000 this year, making the title the undisputed leader in men’s magazines in Singapore.

In the home decor and design category,
Home & Décor, Singapore's No. 1 Interior Design Magazine, saw its readership reach 102,000.

Other SPH Magazines' titles which did well in the survey included
Shape and Simply Her.

SPH's English language radio station, 91.3FM, recorded the highest gain in listenership and was among the top five English radio stations in Singapore.

For the report, The Nielsen Company surveyed 4,862 adults, and results were
weighted by age, sex, race to represent the 3.86 million people living in Singapore aged 15 and above.

In the radio business, SPH has an 80 per cent stake in SPH UnionWorks Pte Ltd, which operates entertainment stations Radio 100.3 in Mandarin and 91.3FM in English.

Events and Outdoor Advertising

SPH’s events subsidiary Sphere Exhibits organises innovative consumer and trade events and exhibitions. In addition, SPH has ventured into out-of-home (OOH) advertising through its wholly-owned subsidiary, SPH MediaBoxOffice Pte Ltd, Singapore’s leading Digital Out-of-Home advertising company.


SPH owns and manages Paragon, the prime retail and office complex in the heart of Orchard Road, Singapore's main shopping belt. SPH's wholly-owned subsidiary, Times Development Pte Ltd, has also developed a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium,
Sky@eleven, at Thomson Road. The Clementi Mall, SPH's latest retail mall, will be operational in 2011.
