The Men’s Health Urbanathlon Returns With More Challenging Obstacles

Singapore, 29 Nov 2010 --- The Men’s Health Urbanathlon - Singapore's toughest urban obstacle race - will return on 20 February 2011 with a new 12km course and a set of nine obstacles that will test the endurance of even the fittest runner.

Starting and ending at the Nicoll Highway MRT station, the new route will take participants into the heart of the Central Business District past the F1 Pit Building, the Esplanade, and new urban landmarks such as the Promontory and Marina Bay Sands.

Given the success of the inaugural Men’s Health Urbanathlon in 2010, the stakes have been raised for the race next year. This time around, the popular obstacles from the 2010 race, such as Down And Dirty (the mud pit), Tyred Out (rows of tyres) and Quantum Leap (road barricades), have been made more difficult.

To truly test the mettle of every Urbanathlete, new and more demanding obstacles, such as Frame Works (navigate a scaffolding structure), The Network (climb up and down a 3-ton truck using a rope web), Wall Street (scale a container) and Brawl And Crawl (leopard crawl for 10m in a zig-zag path) have also been introduced.

Other than the satisfaction of completing the most challenging urban race in Singapore, all participants can also look forward to receiving a race pack worth over S$400. Attractive prizes await the top 10 runners, with the first prize worth more than S$13,000. Registration for the event is now open at

Mr Baey Yam Keng, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, will be in attendance as Guest of Honour for this event.

The Men’s Health Urbanathlon was first launched in New York in 2006, and made its way to Chicago and the United Kingdom soon after. It was was also held in Germany and the Philippines recently. The Singapore race is presented by Subaru.

“Men’s Health Singapore’s inaugural Urbanathlon earlier this year was a huge success. It proved that the endurance running community in Singapore is always looking for new and novel races – and our race lived up to their expectations,” said Mr Raymond Goh, Associate Group Editor at SPH Magazines, publisher of Men’s Health Singapore. “However, we won’t stop there. We’ve made the Urbanathlon 2011 even more demanding. There’s no doubt that all competitors are going to have a blast next year!”

Mr Eugene Low, Deputy Managing Director, SPH Magazines, said: “Because of the extensive publicity that the Men’s Health Urbanathlon is given, it is a perfect platform for sponsors to engage Men’s Health’s readers and associate their brands with Singapore’s most popular men’s magazine."
With a readership of 114,000, Men’s Health is still Singapore’s No. 1 men’s magazine (Nielsen Media Index 2010).

Ms Hannah Tan, regional marketing manager of Motor Image, the distributor of Subaru cars in Asia, said: “Subaru is proud to be the presenter for the Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2011, as both brands share a common philosophy – that is to consistently push the envelop to exceed one’s own limitations. We wish all participants the best as they put their mental ability, stamina and agility to the ultimate test.”

The Singapore edition of this unique race is jointly organised by HiVelocity, the sports event management company responsible for the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore Triathlon and the adidas Sundown Marathon.
