SPH Chairman launches state-of-the-art system for CATS

Singapore, 8 December 2010The Classified Advertisements Sales Hub (or CASH for short), the result of three years of effort by a multi-functional, cross-divisional team at Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), was officially launched by Dr Tony Tan, Chairman of SPH this morning.

As part of the launch event, Dr Tan went through a simulated process of booking an advertisement using the new system, and was led on a guided tour through the CATS call centre to get a better perspective of the entire work system.

Dr Tan said: "To address rising customer expectations and growing ad volume, a new and more powerful system was needed. The fact that we invested so much time and effort into this new system shows our commitment to our clients. We will continue to innovate and improve so as to constantly provide top-notch service and products to our customers."

Developed at a cost of $18 million, CASH overcomes many limitations of its 26-year-old predecessor. While the old system operated in a character-based environment, CASH is windows-based, which means it is intuitive and easier to use. Also, CATS previously needed two separate systems to handle ads in different languages – one for Chinese ads, and another for English and Malay ads. CASH, however, is equipped to handle all types of advertisements.

System rationalisation coupled with a more intuitive user-interface means greater efficiency and shorter training time. New CATS staff can now get up to speed and become fully functional in a shorter time. Following its introduction on 1 September 2010, the CATS staff took only two weeks to fully adapt to the new system and bring its operations up to speed.

Elsie Chua, Executive Vice President, CATS Classified, Marketing Division, said: "While advertisers were once satisfied with simple run-on ads consisting of only a few lines of text, many now value and buy into creative options with colour logos, special layouts and premium positions. This new system will enable us to better serve their needs and value-add in the process.”

From 13 to 31 December 2010, advertisers only need to pay $18 per line (U.P. $30.10 per line) when they place run-on advertisements for publication across all CATS Classified sections (made possible by the sophistication of the new CASH system) in The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Shin Min Daily, Lianhe Wanbao and Berita Harian on the same date.
