Singapore Hawker Masters honoured at inaugural award ceremony

Singapore, 21 January, 2011 – The results of the inaugural Singapore Hawker Masters were announced today and the first batch of Hawker Masters honoured at a ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. The winning chefs received their awards from the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.

The results were announced during the
Asian Masters Gala Dinner. Asian Masters is a month-long celebration of Asia's cuisine, culture and lifestyle organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPH. Guests at the event were treated to a Asian-inspired dinner which closed with a dessert buffet. They were also entertained by Cultural Medallion recipient Dick Lee.

Organised by the flagship newspapers of SPH, The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, the Singapore Hawker Masters is an annual search for the best hawkers in various categories. Hawker Masters for different categories will be awarded each year. For the inaugural search, the categories were: Chicken Rice, Char Kway Teow, Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Roti Prata and Bak Chor Mee.

The search is a stringent one as there are three stages to being named a Hawker Master - nomination, voting and endorsement by the judges. There will only be one master in each category.

The search for the best hawkers kicked off in early October last year. During the first phase, close to 5,000 nominations were received from the public.

Following that, top nominees from individual categories were then listed for public voting during the second phase in November. Up to 14,000 readers of The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao cast their votes to determine three finalists in each category.

The search culminated in December when a panel of eight judges visited the finalists’ stalls to determine who would take the honours of being named a Singapore Hawker Master.

The panel of judges include some of the Singapore’s most famous foodies:

- Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Mr Chia Boon Pin, President of Far East Food Concepts
- Mr Dennis Wee, Chairman of Dennis Wee Group
- Ms Violet Oon, Food Consultant
- Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Deputy News Editor & Food Writer, The Straits Times
- Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Executive Sub-editor, The Straits Times Life!
- Mr Alan Ng, Lifestyle Director/Food Critic, Shin Min Daily News/Lianhe Wanbao
- Ms Tan Pin Yen, Feature Editor, Lianhe Zaobao.

Said Professor Tommy Koh: "I thank The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao for launching this annual competition for the master chefs of our beloved hawker food. Hawker food is uniquely Singaporean. It is right that we recognise and reward the master chefs who cook these iconic dishes to mouth-watering perfection."

Mr Danny Yeo, Assistant Vice-President of Branding and Promotions at SPH, said: "We started this hawker search to give deserving hawkers national recognition, with the hope that it will spur hawkers to keep food standards up."
