SPH's first blood donation drive of 2014 collects 120 units of blood

Bloodbank gets boost during festive period from January edition of SPH Red Apple Day 2014

Singapore, 21 January 2014 – The SPH Red Apple Day, a biannual blood donation drive jointly organised by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Red Cross, saw 120 units of blood collected from 170 donors at the SPH News Centre Auditorium today.

The first hour of the event was open only to SPH staff. Members of the public were allowed to donate thereafter, from 12 noon to 5pm.

The SPH Red Apple day was originally organised as a yearly event in 2001. Since 2011, it has been made a biannual event to help increase blood donations in the festive periods when it usually dips. The previous SPH Red Apple Day held on 13 August 2013 collected 147 units of blood from 206 donors.

Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH and a regular blood donor, said: “The SPH Red Apple Day has been held since 2001 and as a biannual event since 2011 to aid the Bloodbank during the festive period when there is usually a decrease in donors. I am glad that our efforts with the Singapore Red Cross have always been met with good response by donors who generously donate their blood to help others."

The SPH Red Apple Day is supported by SPH MediaBoxOffice, AsiaOne, SPH Radio’s HOT FM91.3, Kiss92, UFM100.3 and sponsored by Cerebos, Marigold, Nestle, Gardenia, Benelux, Spatone and Centrum.
