The Straits Times and The Business Times will present concert at the National Stadium on August 7, 2015.
Singapore, 15 October 2014 - The Straits Times and The Business Times, two English papers in the Singapore Press Holdings group, are joining in Singapore's 50th jubilee celebrations next year by presenting Sing50, a showcase of 50 years of Singapore songs and music. The mega concert will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the National Stadium in the Sports Hub.
The two newspapers are leading a search for popular songs that different generations of Singaporeans have enjoyed since the 1960s. Sing50 will include home-grown compositions that became hits as well as other familiar favourites from across genres, cultures and communities.
Sing50 will feature a mainly Singaporean cast of performers, including well-known names and former stars of the ChildAid series of concerts, as well as a few foreign guest artistes. As far as possible, the original singers or composers will appear. Other highlights include a performance by between 50 and 100 pianists playing on 50 Steinway grand pianos, a 1,000-strong choir drawn from community and school groups, and a segment featuring 100 rappers.
The organising committee, co-chaired by The Business Times editor Alvin Tay and The Straits Times deputy editor Alan John, has begun a search for the songs to be featured at Sing50.
Said Mr Tay: "I hope the show will not only bring back musical memories from the past 50 years, but also spark an inter-generational exchange that will see younger Singaporeans learning about the songs their parents and grandparents grew up with, while presenting acts that young people enjoy today."
Mr John said: "The team behind Sing50 is hunting down the best of the songs people listened to on the radio, sang or danced to. We hope everyone will enjoy reliving the good times at the concert as well as in various activities being planned around it."
Mr Jeremiah Choy, creative director of Sing50, who is shaping the programme, liaising with performers and collaborators, and also developing outreach efforts linked to the concert, said: "Singapore has had a rich musical heritage through the decades and one that is certainly worth celebrating.”
"It is so apt that 'Sing' is the first syllable of Singapore. We are coming together and celebrating through music and songs that mattered to Singapore from 1965 till now. Older Singaporeans will be able to live through the iconic songs of their day again. And the younger generation can find out more about our country through these songs."
Sing50 is supported by SG50, which is drawing up a calendar of jubilee events for 2015 and whose steering committee comprises senior representatives from the government, private and business sectors.
Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), who heads the SG50 Programme Office, said: "Sing50 is a tribute to Singapore’s rich tapestry of music that is, in turn, a reflection of our multi-cultural society and rich heritage. I am happy to see the strong support from our community for Singapore music, and the arts and heritage as a whole. In 2015, we will come together to celebrate our 50th birthday, to celebrate who we are as a people, and to celebrate how we have come together to make Singapore the place we call home. "
The executive producer for Sing50 is The RICE Company Ltd, a non-profit organisation which promotes arts and culture initiatives locally and overseas, and provides fully-sponsored arts training programmes for young people from financially-disadvantaged families.
Ahead of Sing50, a team of music researchers has begun shortlisting songs to be featured in the concert. It is looking at songs that were written, popularised or performed by Singapore residents. The experts are looking for songs that resonated with Singaporeans or made an impact on the music scene. Before the concert list is finalised, the organisers will also seek input from the public.
In the lead-up to the concert, The Straits Times and The Business Times will feature the selected songs, composers and performers in the newspapers and their digital platforms. There are plans to make available the lyrics of the songs, and to reach out to schools to get students to know them too. Also in the works is a booklet featuring the songs and stories about the development of the local pop music scene, as well as a CD compilation.
Coming up next will be calls for performers, choral groups, rappers and pianists keen to be a part of Sing50, with auditions targeted for January and February next year.
