Thursday, 16 October 2014 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has helped to raise over 900 kg of food for The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in just two weeks.
Comprising canned and dry food, the donations came from individuals as well as business units across SPH.
SPCA is a registered animal welfare charity with IPC status and relies on donations to carry out its animal welfare work. It aims to be the leading authority on animal welfare and cruelty issues in Singapore works through education, advocacy and action.
According to SPCA statistics, the 800 dogs and 1500 cats under the care of SPCA consume 5475 kg of dry dog food, 1241 kg of dry cat food, 1533 kg of canned dog food and 730 kg of canned cat food annually.
There are also about 100 stray cats living on St John’s and Lazarus islands, presently cared for by SPCA as part of its TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) programme. SPCA has embarked on several trips to the island to sterilize the cats and control and monitor the cat population there.
Ms Corinne Fong, Executive Director, SPCA said : “We are delighted that SPH has decided to help us. They have shown great support and corporate community responsibility at a time when it is most needed. We hope others will join SPH to support us and at the same time raise people’s consciousness about animal welfare.”
