Her World celebrates 25th anniversary of its iconic Woman of the Year award honouring veteran social worker Dr Sudha Nair and MD of funeral service provider Jenny Tay

Singapore, 24 August 2016 – Her World, Singapore’s No. 1 women’s magazine, published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), presented the prestigious Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2016 at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore tonight. Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development was the event’s Guest of Honour.

Her World, a monthly title for stylish achievers, prides itself in being the voice of the Singapore woman. For the past 56 years, it has engaged and inspired readers with exciting reads about dynamic women.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Her World Woman of the Year award. Her World was one of the first local magazines to pioneer an award for inspiring, power women, and till today, it remains one of the magazine’s signature annual events.

Her World has presented the Her World Woman of the Year award and Her World Young Woman Achiever award since 1991 and 1999 respectively. The two prestigious awards honour the achievements of women who are inspirational role models to other women.

The Her World Woman of the Year award recognises a woman whose outstanding achievements have brought her to public notice and earned her wide respect. She projects the best of Singapore at home and abroad, and her accomplishments will leave a lasting impression. She is an inspiration and role model to other women. Past winners include Professor Chan Heng Chee (1991), Ms Jennie Chua (1999), Dr Noeleen Heyzer (2007), Professor Ivy Ng (2011/12) and Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Zuraidah Abdullah (2015).

The Her World Woman of the Year 2016 is Dr Sudha Nair, 58, executive director of Promoting Alternatives to Family Violence (PAVE).

One of Singapore’s most pre-eminent social workers, Dr Nair was appointed as a Member of the Public Service Commission in 2015. This is the body responsible for appointing officers to the government’s elite Administrative Service and for the appointment and promotion of officers to senior management. She is the first social worker to be chosen, marking a milestone for the sector.

Dr Nair started her social work career at Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre (then called the Ang Mo Kio Social Service Centre) in 1986. She was named the inaugural winner of the Outstanding Social Worker Award in 1998, and later became the driving force behind the establishment of PAVE. Founded in 1999, PAVE holds the distinction of being Singapore's first family violence specialist centre. Under Dr Nair's watch, PAVE will also be running a new child protection specialist centre (slated to open in 2017).

Dr Nair is also an assistant professor at the department of social work at National University of Singapore.

“This award gives recognition to all social workers who battle every day, with the complexities that families bring; and through their creativity, perseverance and humour attempt to make a difference in the lives of fellow vulnerable Singaporeans. I am deeply honoured to receive it,” she said.

The Her World Young Woman Achiever award recognises a young woman who aims higher and reaches further to achieve more. Her achievements have surpassed existing boundaries, inspiring those around her and paving the way for others in the future. She has also demonstrated the potential for attaining a higher level of success in her chosen field.

The Her World Young Woman Achiever 2016 is Jenny Tay, 30, managing director of Direct Funeral Services (DFS).

Prior to joining the company founded by her father Roland Tay, Jenny, who holds a business diploma from Nanyang Polytechnic and a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of New South Wales, worked in marketing and advertising. Innovations she has introduced to the company — and to the death industry here — include providing clients with grief counseling, and implementing a night watch service so mourning families do not have to stay overnight at the wake venue.
In 2015, she established Direct Life Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of lives of people through education, activities and charitable efforts. In collaboration with SingCapital, she published a book covering issues people should consider in order to prepare for death.

“I feel very honoured and humbled to receive this award as there are many other outstanding women who excel in their field of work. It has spurred me to do even more for the causes that I believe in: providing proper closure for families who have lost their loved ones; bringing more smiles to the lonely elderly in our community; and reminding people to cherish those they love. I always tell people: ‘we shouldn't live life fearing death, but fear the realisation that we have not truly lived upon death’, said Jenny.

Tracy Lee, editor of Her World, said: “From activitists to ambassadors, surgeons to swimmers, entrepreneurs to entertainers, CEOs to chefs, photographers to philantrophists, these Her World initiatives showcase a diverse range of female role models. In our social media-obsessed times, where so many women obsess over what complete strangers in other parts of the world are wearing, it’s become more important than ever for Her World to champion real ‘sheroes’— women whose commitments, ambitions, interests and talents lie over, above and beyond looking stylish and attractive in their OOTD."

Mr Loh Yew Seng, CEO of SPH Magazines, said: "Since 1991, the Her World Woman of the Year awards has been a key annual event for this empowering women's title, which wholeheartedly supports today’s successful women while inspiring the next generation’s leaders. This year is even more significant for us as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Her World Woman of the Year. We will continue to provide exceptional content and bring the awards into the next era."

The event was presented by BMW, Damiani, Estee Lauder and Franck Muller.
