Local brands Old Chang Kee and Ya Kun see FLAsia as a platform to franchise internationally

Singapore, 22 September 2016 – Franchising & Licensing Asia (FLAsia) is the International Event for Entrepreneurship, Business Opportunities & Intellectual Property Rights in Asia. Themed “Enter, Expand, Explore”, this year’s FLAsia encourages brand owners to enter new markets, expand their global footprint and explore new business horizons.

FLAsia is presented by Franchising and Licensing Association (FLA) Singapore, and organised by BizLink Exhibition Services Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). The three-day event will take place from 13 – 15 October at Marina Bay Sands, Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 1, Exhibition Hall B. Admission is free.
Its 11th showing promises a substantial representation of established and promising brands and franchises, both domestic and international.
Singaporean brands Old Chang Kee, Ya Kun and MUNCH Saladsmith will be participating in FLAsia 2016 all with the same aim of expanding the business and reaching out to more franchisees globally.
Old Chang Kee was established in 1956 and has since evolved. It now specialises in the manufacture and sale of affordable high quality food products including the signature curry puff. Production is carried out in a modern factory with high-end technology and stringent quality control measures. All production processes are certified to have met HACCP and Halal standards. Old Chang Kee now markets its snack products through retail outlets at petrol kiosks and shopping malls.
Mr Song Yeow Chung, Group Financial Controller of Old Chang Kee, said: “Old Chang Kee’s popularity with Singaporeans cuts across different age groups and races. Over the years, we have received numerous requests from other nationals to bring Old Chang Kee to their countries. Through FLAsia 2016, we hope to find sincere and dynamic strategic partners to expand Old Chang Kee in Asia together.”
One other heritage Singaporean brand Ya Kun, with more than 70 years of history, has grown from a coffee stall selling kaya toast and coffee in Telok Ayer Basin to a coffee chain with more than 110 outlets in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and more. 
At FLAsia 2016, Ya Kun will be showcasing both the Ya Kun Kaya Toast brand for regional expansion as well as Beard Papa – a well-known bakery chain from Japan, of which Ya Kun International is the Master Franchise in Singapore. A new product was developed as a result of this partnership – Beard Papa’s puffs filled with Ya Kun’s coconut jam, with more new products in the pipeline.
MUNCH Saladsmith, a locally grown brand, is participating in FLAsia for the 3rd consecutive year. As a result of their previous participation in FLAsia, MUNCH opened their very first overseas unit just last month at the Venetian Grand Canal in BGC, Philippines.
Mr Edwin Ng, Director of MUNCH Saladsmith, said: “Our wholesome, delicious salads and roasts have appealed to the new breed of middle-class consumers across Southeast Asia and their constant innovation among different taste profiles has set them up for both a solid and successful entry across the ASEAN market.”
