Singapore, 19 November 2016 – Simply Her, the solutions-driven lifestyle magazine, invited home cooks to participate in their Birthday Cooking Challenge as part of its 12th anniversary celebrations. Three pairs of home cooks fried, steamed and even baked their way to become the winners of the cooking competition held earlier today at Singapore Expo.
Ten pairs of amateur cooks had less than two hours to whip up a tofu dish using Vitasoy’s Spouted Tofu range and Mazola Corn Oil, and to create a dessert using Vitasoy Soya Bean Drink. Each team was given an Electrolux Table Top Induction Hob (ETD29PKB) to use during the cooking challenge. Participants were also required to plate their dishes using Luzerne tableware.Prior to the Cooking Challenge, participants were caught by surprise when they were told to draw lots to determine which one of the three mystery Electrolux appliances* they would use during the competition. On the day of the competition, the participants were surprised yet again when they were tasked to include pineapples into their dishes.
*The three Electrolux appliances were Oven Toaster (EOT4805K), Rice Cooker (ERC3405) and a Blender (EBR3526).
Each dish was awarded points based on taste (30%), creativity and presentation (25%), variety of ingredients used (15%), work organisation (10%), hygiene (10%) and teamwork (10%). Coming in first place in the Simply Her Birthday Cooking Challenge was Aaron Tang, 35, and Mavis Tan, 34, who cooked Sweet and Sour Tofu Ball and Gula Melaka Chendol Soya Pudding. Aaron, a civil servant, and his wife took home $3,500 worth of Electrolux vouchers, two Luzerne Marble 16-piece sets worth $712.60, $150 worth of Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy F&B vouchers, one carton (48 packs) of Vitasoy Soya Bean Drink and a dozen bottles of Mazola Corn Oil.
"We had a lot of fun during the challenge and were really surprised that we came in first place," shared Mavis, a homemaker.
Mr Lens Gwee, Executive Vice President of The Food & Beverage Management Association Singapore, said: "There were so much effort, passion and teamwork on display at the Cooking Challenge! Watching them turn a simple dish of tofu into amazing creations and unique dishes was indeed inspiring."
The second prize went to Christine Woo, 39 and Cindy Woo, 37, who made Pumpkin Salted Egg Tofu and Mango Soya Milk Cheese Cake. The sisters took home $2,500 worth of Electrolux vouchers, two Luzerne Urban Grey Web 16-piece sets worth $459.20, $100 worth of Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy F&B vouchers, one carton of Vitasoy Soya Bean Drink and a dozen bottles of Mazola Corn Oil.
Third prize went to Darwin Gosal, 35, and Ng Wei Chee, 33, who made Tofu Hors d’Oeuvres with Tofu Ricotta and Rum & Raisin Chocolate Cremeux. The husband and wife pair took home $1,500 worth of Electrolux vouchers, two Luzerne Rustic Sama 16-piece sets worth $435.20, $50 worth of Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy F&B vouchers, one carton of Vitasoy Soya Bean Drink and a dozen bottles of Mazola Corn Oil. Apart from Mr Lens Gwee, the panel of judges included Chef Victor Lee, Head Chef of Jia Wei restaurant at Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy and Penelope Chan, Editor of Simply Her.The event was held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Food Expo exhibition, which runs 19-20 November at Singapore Expo Hall 4.
