Female celebrates 20 years of FemaleGP with second instalment of The Best Dressed edition

Singapore, 24 November 2016 –  Female magazine’s annual search for Singapore’s next fashion stars has entered its 20th year and capped off the milestone with a riotous party at Cherry Discotheque earlier this evening. 

Since its inception in 1996, Female’s 50 Gorgeous People has served as an influential platform for discovering individuals with star power and charisma, some of whom have progressed to become today’s well-known personalities, including actor Pierre Png, musician Benjamin Kheng, and founder of Collate The Label, Velda Tan.

Progressive and fashion-focused, Female has always pushed for fresh initiatives such as the Female Collective, a collaborative network of influential shakers and movers of the creative scene who were brought together by the magazine. Last year, Female’s 50 Gorgeous People rebranded itself to become FemaleGP: The Best Dressed Edition – shifting its focus to identifying the aesthetes who love fashion and have an undeniable style of their own.

Twenty finalists –10 male and 10 female – were shortlisted from over 1,000 Instagram entries and Female crowned the winners at the party tonight. Darren Loke won the title for Best Dressed Male, and Parveen Hassanbhai took home the title of Best Dressed Female. For the first time, a Most Popular category was created and Isabella Chan is its inaugural winner.   

Hosted by TV presenter Liv Lo, the event included a screening of the finalists’ video interviews, a montage clip showcasing the past contest finalists from over the years, and featured music spun by Female’s own F-Collective member, Amanda Keisha Ang performing as A/K/A Sounds and DuriO, both jointly a part of the deejay group ATTAGIRL! Amongst the 300 guests were Aarika Lee, Nadia Rahmat and Aude Giraud from the Female Collective.

The award for Best Dressed Male went to co-founder of leather good label Omitir Concepts and education consultant, Darren Loke, 26 while model manager, Parveen Hassanbhai, 28 took the title for Best Dressed Female. The two were selected by Dhylan Boey, Group Editor of SPH Magazines; Noelle Loh, Editor of Female; Monica Tan, Director of Kimage; Julyen Loo, trainer/lead artist at Nars Cosmetics, and Charmaine Seah-Ong, co-founder of Elementary Co. and Female Collective member. Digital marketer, Isabella Chan, 25 won the Most Popular award.

The results were based on the finalists’ OOTD posts on Instagram; an editorial spread from the November 2016 issue of Female; and a brief video interview in which they shared their personal opinions about fashion. The Most Popular award was decided by the highest accumulated votes from all the OOTDs posted on the website.

Noelle Loh, Editor of Female, said: “All the winners were deserving – for their individualistic takes on style, for not blindly follow trends and expressing their personalities through what they wear, and for setting the bar on what it means to be stylish in Singapore.” 

The Best Dressed Male and Female winners each went home with $2,600 worth of prizes, while the Most Popular winner received $1, 600 worth of prizes from sponsors and partners, including a staycation at W Singapore, and gift cards from Kimage, Nars Cosmetics and Orchard Gateway. They will also have the opportunity to be featured in an upcoming issue of Female.
