Singapore, 26 November 2016 – Participants at The New Paper Courts Big Walk 2016 took a leisurely stroll on the wild side earlier today at the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. About 5,000 walkers were treated to a fun-filled event with a route through lots of flora and fauna that the iconic locations are known for. The 5km route, which kicked off at 2pm, began with an exciting trail along Night Safari and ended at the Singapore Zoo. Walkers saw animals such as Ah Meng the orang utan, Chawang the elephant, and Makaia the Australian tree kangaroo. Walkers also got to meet the Night Safari’s latest addition, Neha – the offspring of elephants Chawang and Nandong – the first baby elephant in six years.
Mr Dominic Nathan, editor of The New Paper, said: "Every year we try and find an interesting route for families to enjoy. This year we raised the fun quotient up a few notches with our walk through the Singapore Zoo and we're glad the participants enjoyed it despite the rain."
The event’s Guest of Honour, Minister for Social and Family Development Mr Tan Chuan-Jin joined in the Walk, alongside celebrities as well as long-time Big Walk supporters and their families.
“We want our families to grow stronger from generation to generation. Making that conscious effort to spend time together with our grandparents, parents and children is one of the best ways to ensure that we remain active and present in our families’ lives. Events like The New Paper Big Walk are a great way for families to bond both with their immediate and extended family members. Such activities help us build better communication and rapport, fostering stronger family bonds,” said Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development.
Presented by Courts and co-organiser, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, The New Paper Courts Big Walk @ Singapore Zoo is also sponsored by Captain Oats, CompresSports, Foto88, Health Domain, 100Plus, Julies, Mobot, Naturel Organic, Texas Chicken and Union Group of Companies.
Launched in 1991, the signature Big Walk has transformed over the years from being a competitive and fun walk to a mega family event which sees participants walking to exciting destinations. Participants have walked to Marina Barrage in 2008 and the Promontory at Marina Bay in 2010; through Universal Studios Singapore in 2011 and the Benjamin Sheares Bridge in 2014. Last year, in conjunction with SG50, The Jubilee Big Walk, took participants on a commemorative trail that connected the past, present and future of the Singapore Story.

About The New Paper
Launched in 1988, The New Paper has pioneered a style of journalism in Singapore that goes for sharp news angles. It puts a human face to Singapore stories and to complicated issues of the day. The New Paper is the second most-read English newspaper in Singapore after The Straits Times, with a huge following for its sports pages that provide strong sports coverage, especially in soccer news. The New Paper is also pioneering a different form of tabloid journalism by presenting complex issues in an easy-to-read, pop style for young and busy readers. It catches readers’ eyes with bold and colourful designs, exciting layouts and punch headlines. Now a big part of the Singapore scene, The New Paper strolled into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000, when its annual mass-fitness event, The New Paper Big Walk, was recognised as the largest walk in the world.
