SPH organises year end party for underprivileged children

Singapore, 12 December 2016 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) invited over 100 beneficiaries and caregivers from Beyond Social Services (Jalan Bukit Ho Swee), Beyond Social Services (Lengkok Bahru), Life Student Care (Hougang) and Life Community Services Society - Mighty Kids, Families and Community to its annual year end party today.

The lunchtime party at News Centre Auditorium was organised in conjunction with Boys' Brigade Share-a-Gift Project which SPH has taken part for the 11th consecutive year.

This year, about 300 wishes from 13 charities were adopted and fulfilled by management and staff, with the total value of the contributions amounting to about $20,000.

SPH senior management and staff volunteers helped to spread some festive cheer by playing games with the children and caregivers, and treated them to a buffet lunch.

Mr Desmond Koh, Executive Director of Boys' Brigade, said: "We are happy to partner SPH for the Boys' Brigade Share-a-Gift Project for the 11th year. Apart from the generous adoption of wishes, SPH also goes the extra mile to organise a year-end party for the beneficiaries every year. We hope that more organisations will also join us to make this annual event a success."

Besides this meaningful event, SPH, SPH Foundation and SPH's various products and business groups are also actively involved in community and charity projects throughout the year.

About 20 business units in SPH took part in the "Adopt a Charity" scheme initiated by the SPH Staff Volunteers Club, led by the Corporate Communications & CSR Division with support by the Human Resources Division. This is in addition to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, and the Chinese Media Group's annual support of President's Challenge.

For the "Adopt-a-Charity" scheme, each business unit is given an annual funding of $600 to offset its expenses when planning activities for its adopted charity. SPH also gives staff involved two half days a year to be involved in the charitable activities. Various divisions would organise their own activities or charity outings for their adopted charities.

SPH also organises many signature charity events annually, including the SPH and SPH Foundation charity cheque presentation to Community Chest, SPH Charity Carnival (a charity bazaar to raise funds for a good cause), Lunching in the Dark (where staff dine in total darkness in aid of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped), SPH Food for Furry Friends (a pet food donation drive for abandoned and stray animals, SPH Flea Market (to promote recycling and donations to The Salvation Army), SPH Red Apple Day (blood donation drive with the Singapore Red Cross) and SPH Bags of Love (an annual event where festive bags are given to the elderly).
