Record participants for National Chinese Challenge 2018

- About 1,900 students from 88 schools will take part in the national quiz this year

Singapore, 22 March 2018 --- National Chinese Challenge (NCC), a nationwide Chinese language quiz for students, will return with more participants for the fifth year.

This year, about 1,900 students from 88 schools have registered to take part in the quiz as compared to about 1,700 participants from 75 schools in 2017.

The quiz, which is jointly organised by Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Chinese Media Group and Nanyang Girls’ High School, will kick off with preliminary rounds this Saturday, 24 March.

The objective of the national quiz is to promote Chinese culture and cultivate the interest in learning Chinese amongst students through a fun competition. The event aims to attract students who have a good grasp of Chinese language and culture to challenge and pit their knowledge against one another for the championship trophy. It has both Primary School and Secondary School categories.

The competition will test participants on their knowledge of Chinese language which includes translation skills of commonly used terms from English to Chinese, Chinese proverbs and idioms through pictures, pronunciation, literature, current affairs and general knowledge.

The top six secondary schools with the highest scores from the preliminary round will enter the semi-finals, of which four schools will compete in the finals on 13 April. For the primary category, the top four schools with the highest scores will enter directly into the finals. Each team will consist of four students, including one reserve participant. Only one non-Singaporean student is allowed in each team.

NCC is co-presented by ICBC and supported by The Star Vista, Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), National Translation Committee (NTC) and Promote Mandarin Council (PMC).
