SPH Gift of Music celebrates SPH's 35th anniversary with musical treats

Singapore, 5 March 2019 --- SPH Gift of Music, a series of free community concerts sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH), will kick off this year’s programme with Symphony in the Gardens by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) at Gardens by the Bay on 9 March.

Launched in 2005, SPH Gift of Music will also mark SPH’s 35th anniversary celebrations this year with a wide repertoire of concerts and varied musical genre at the heartlands, parks, shopping malls and Esplanade. There will be a total of 13 concerts this year.

In line with SPH's 35th anniversary celebrations, SSO, conducted by Joshua Tan, will play a line-up of celebratory classical pieces this Saturday, including the lively Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov, the dramatic Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 by Liszt and the exciting Overture from Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel.

Opera in the Park by the Singapore Lyric Opera will be extended from 60 minutes to 90 minutes this year on 15 June at the beautiful Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opera in the Park will give opera lovers a treat of the best-loved operas, including Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, Carmen and Aida.

Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) will wow shoppers at Paragon with their performance of classical favourites such as Crown Imperial by William Walton and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky. Both compositions were written by the respective composers when they were 35 years old. OMM will also play Raiders March by John Williams from the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was released in 1984, the same year SPH was incorporated.

In the month of August, which is the birthday month of SPH, three concerts will be held to mark this special occasion. On 4 August, SPH's actual birthday, local Chinese ensemble Ding Yi Music Company will perform a string of popular local hits including popular xinyao songs in the past 35 years.

Following that, on 10 August, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will entertain music lovers with a string of pop music and national songs written in the last 35 years at Singapore Botanic Gardens.

On 22 August, SPH’s 35th Anniversary Charity Concert will be held at Capitol Theatre. The charity concert, which is the annual charity cheque presentation to Community Chest, will feature local groups Samba Masala, MICappella, Ding Yi and K-Aos from Académie of Stars. Beneficiaries from Community Chest will be invited to watch the concert.

Other concerts in the line-up include The Straits Times Concert in the Gardens by the SSO, more community concerts by the SCO at various heartlands, as well as two ethnic arts festivals, namely Pesta Raya - Malay Festival of Arts and Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of Arts at the Esplanade.
