SPH clinches 4 accolades at INMA Global Media Awards 2019

- SPH is named Best in Asia/Pacific, Regional/Local Brands for The Straits Times Asia Report Magazine  
- The Straits Times Asia Report Magazine wins first place for Best New Print Product

Singapore, 18 May 2019 - Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) has won 4 accolades at the INMA Global Media Awards held on 17 May (New York time). The awards were presented at the closing dinner of the INMA World Congress of News Media at the Edison Ballroom in New York’s Times Square.  

The competition is produced by the International News Media Association (INMA) to honour top campaigns worldwide by news media companies to grow audience, revenue and brand. This year, 194 finalists made it to the top, out of 664 entries from 165 news media companies in 34 countries. Participants included newspaper media, magazine media, digital media, television media, and radio media.
The judges selected from the finalists the best in six world regions and SPH was named Best in Asia/Pacific, Regional/Local Brands for The Straits Times Asia Report Magazine.
In addition, SPH won first place for Best New Print Product for The Straits Times Asia Report Magazine, a bi-monthly magazine which is a curation of the best analyses and features about Asia from SPH’s flagship English daily The Straits Times. It has featured key topics, including the Trump-Kim Summit, the beginning of Japan’s Reiwa Era and Elections across Asia. The Straits Times Asia Report Magazine will be a monthly publication starting from June. 

Mr Warren Fernandez, Editor-in-Chief of English, Malay and Tamil Media Group, and Editor of The Straits Times, said: "We are continuing to invest heavily in our network of overseas correspondents as this enables us to produce unique, insider, insights on Asia for our audience in Singapore and around the world. The ST Asia Report curates and showcases their best work. We are delighted that this new effort has been recognised."
SPH came in second place for Best Execution of Print Advertising for "The Colourful Cat Advertisement” campaign. The print advertisement was created to promote the Classified section. It features a colouring ad consisting of cats in different poses which sends a message to readers to adopt a cat through the Classified section. The ad was well received by readers.

Mr Ignatius Low, Chief Marketing Officer of SPH, said: “We’re glad that our creative campaign has garnered this prestigious accolade. Most people perceived Classified as a section to promote vehicles, property and tour advertisements but it is also a marketplace with a host of surprising finds such as garage sale, antiques, lost and found items, and even pet adoption. We’re glad that this ad campaign has successfully reached out to our advertisers and readers to explore the Classified section.”  

SPH came in third place for the Best New Corporate Innovation Initiative with “Project Storm: An Innovation Journey”. The 100-day project was launched in April 2018 to help SPH transform in the face of challenges and disruptions in the media industry. Project Storm encourages staff to adopt new ways of working and introduces strategies, tools and skills to improve the company’s innovation capabilities. Selected staff formed teams to come up with innovative projects. The culmination of Project Storm was the SPH Innovation Day on 4 July 2018 which showcased these projects by staff.
Ms Fiona Chan, Head of Media Strategy & Analytics, SPH, said: “The appetite for innovation and new ways of working in SPH is tremendous, and it was opportune for us to launch Project Storm to meet our colleagues' desire for transformation. Since then, SPH has rolled out systematic innovative training and large-scale cross-functional projects involving hundreds of staff, to help them not just survive but thrive amid the disruption in the media industry. This award serves as motivation for us to continue to intensify our innovative initiatives to transform our media business, and we hope it will also inspire others in the same way."
