Lianhe Zaobao launches a series of six monthly bilingual lectures on Southeast Asia

Singapore, 11 September 2019 – Lianhe Zaobao, the flagship Chinese daily of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has launched a lecture series called “ZB Lectures” (早报讲堂)to help readers to better understand Southeast Asia.

This is the first time Zaobao is organising a bilingual lecture series in both Mandarin and English. Experts on Southeast Asia will gather to discuss the region’s history, politics, culture and religion from diverse perspectives in six monthly lectures from August 2019 to February 2020. Simultaneous translation is provided at all lectures.

The first two lectures were held successfully on 10 August and 2 September respectively. The first lecture, conducted in Mandarin, was delivered by Dr Leo Suryadinata at the Lifelong Learning Institute in conjunction with the yearly SkillsFuture Festival. It attracted more than 200 participants. Dr Suryadinata is Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute and Adjunct Professor at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

The second lecture on 2 September, conducted in English, was anchored by Dr Norshahril Saat, an expert on race and religion in Indonesia and Malaysia. His lecture on identity formation in the Nusantara was a breakthrough for SPH’s Chinese Media Group (CMG) as it was the first time an English speaker was invited to speak at a lecture.

Registration for the third lecture by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute Senior Fellow Mr Daljit Singh will start on 12 September. The lecture, titled “Echoes of the Cold War: Nationalist Struggles in Vietnam and Cambodia”, will be held at the Lifelong Learning Institute on 3 October (Thursday). English-to-Mandarin translation will be provided at the lecture. More details will be available on on 12 September.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of CMG, SPH, said: “There is now a continuous push to get more Singaporeans to pick up new skills, but we must also not overlook knowledge, since the two come hand in hand. Similarly, with the renewed emphasis on the Southeast Asian market, we also have to bear in mind that it should not only be about the economics. We should be asking ourselves: How much do we know about the region? With these six specially curated lectures, designed in collaboration with academics and research institutes, we hope to be able to embark on a learning journey with our readers, and at the same time broaden our perspectives when it comes to understanding the history and politics of Southeast Asia. ”
Video recordings of all six lectures will be made available for the public to access on The first two lectures have been uploaded onto the website, which can be accessed via this link:
