Singapore, 11 October 2019 - Syed Hassan Mohamed Al-Attas, one of the longest serving Imams in Singapore, was presented with the prestigious Berita Harian Achiever of The Year 2019 award by Guest-of-Honour Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Heng Swee Keat. The ceremony took place on 11 October, Friday at One Farrer Hotel.
Syed Hassan Mohamed Al-Attas was conferred the prestigious award for outstanding contributions in interfaith work.
The Berita Harian Achiever of the Year (Anugerah Jauhari Berita Harian) award is presented annually to outstanding Malay/Muslim individuals for their achievements in various fields. Recipients are chosen based on attributes such as perseverance, determination, integrity, and the ability to overcome odds. In addition, recipients are expected to be upheld as role models for the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore. The Berita Harian Young Achiever of the Year Award (Anugerah Jauhari Harapan Berita Harian) is presented annually to outstanding young members of the Malay/Muslim community aged 30 and below.
Known affectionately by the local community as Habib Hassan, Habib has been Imam and Head of Ba’alwie Mosque, for over 40 years. He is also a council member of the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO), the oldest Interfaith Organization in the World and member of the Board of Trustees of Rahmatan Lil Alamin. Habib Hassan's writings are often featured in local and foreign newspapers and magazines. In 2015, his writings were presented at the United Nations, UNESCO convention and published in Paris.

Guest-of-Honour Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Heng Swee Keat also presented the Berita Harian Young Achiever of the Year Award 2019 to Muhammad Dhafer Muhammad Faishal. At the tender age of 19, Dhafer was awarded the President’s Scholarship this year, the third Malay recipient of the prestigious scholarship. Dhafer was also recently awarded the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement.
Crediting his father, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Social and Family Development & Ministry of Education, Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim for his positive influence, Dhafer said: "I learnt from my father that even though the work is tough, it’s really about the purpose you’re going in with and the kind of impact you have on people,”
Mr Saat A. Rahman said: “This award showcases the amazing level of maturity and meritorious qualities that many young Malay/Muslims in our community possess. It is very heartening to see Dhafer's amazing contributions and commitment, both academic-wise and through his community work. We hope that with this award, he will continue to work hard and inspire other young Malay/Muslims to achieve their goals.”
