Singapore, 17 January 2007 - Over 800 patients and caregivers have enjoyed the SCO Caring Series (关怀系列音乐会) since its launch in April last year. Sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) under its SPH Gift of Music Series (新加坡报业控股
音乐献礼), the musicians from Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO 新加坡华乐团) will wrap up its 2006 series in a final installment at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH 新加坡中央医院) on January 19 at 7pm.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, will be the Guest-of-Honour. He will be accompanied by Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH, SCO Chairman Mr Chew Keng Juea (周景锐先生) and SCO Board of Directors.
The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO), the youth wing of SCO, will join its seniors from SCO in the 45-minute concert at the SGH. The repertoire of this evening concert will consist of crowd-pleasers such as easy-listening classics Melodies of Yangzhou
(扬州小调), Folk Tunes of Australia (澳洲民歌两首),and evergreen classic Top of the World,a chart-topping hit made famous by The Carpenters.
The SCO Caring Series was launched with the objective of bringing music to benefit patients and residents in hospitals and hospices who would otherwise not be able to enjoy outdoor performances. Patients and caregivers from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital, St Luke´s Hospital, St Andrew´s Community Hospital and Dover Park Hospice were treated to performances by SCO musicians last year when the series toured local hospitals and hospices.
Heartened by the positive response from the patients and medical staff of these beneficiary hospitals, SCO, in addition to performing at hospitals, will extend the SCO Caring Series to children’s homes and orphanages in the new series this year. In line with the youth theme of this year’s SPH Gift of Music series, SCO Caring Series will make an effort to educate and reach out to children and youths from orphanages and children´s homes in Singapore.
"The healing power of music is proven to soothe and calm the sick. Our partnership with SCO in this community project has brought music to the doorsteps of those who are unable to enjoy the beauty of music in the usual venue. This year, we hope to bring the joy of music to a bigger audience by extending the SCO Caring Series to children’s homes and orphanages," says Ms Ginney Lim, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications, SPH (林美玲，执行副总裁，新加坡报业控股企业通讯部）。
“Music is an inherent part of who we really are and its exposure during a child´s early years has significant effects on their overall well-being. By introducing Chinese music to the kids at the children´s home, we hope to bring the joy of music-making to the child´s life," says SCO Executive Director Mr Ken Chang (张振源,新加坡华乐团行政总监).
This year’s SCO Caring Series will tour Bright Vision Hospital, Infant Jesus Home, Assisi Home & Hospice, Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped and the Haven Children’s Home (Singapore Salvation Army), in addition to an outdoor concert at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Since its launch in May 2005, the SPH Gift of Music series has been staging outdoor concerts for the Singapore audience. The SPH Gift of Music brings concerts to the community with performances in the heartlands, parks, hospitals and hospices to connect with the community.
