SPH to bring back festive cheer to needy elderly at Care Corner Senior Activity Centre at Woodlands

Singapore, 16 January 2020 More than 20 staff from Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) will be distributing fortune bags (福袋) to 120 needy elderly at Care Corner Senior Activity Centre at Woodlands on 20 January, as part of SPH Staff Volunteers Club’s annual "SPH Cares with Bags of Love" event. This is also the first time SPH staff volunteers are bringing back festive cheer to the same centre a year later, to forge stronger connections with the senior citizens there.

Each fortune bag contains daily essential items donated by sponsors and staff, such as brown rice, medicated plasters and oil, pouch, shower essentials, dental brush and gel, 3-in-1 milo sachets and Mandarin oranges.

To liven up the festive atmosphere, there will be performances by contestants of SPH’s Got Talent 2019, a staff talent show in celebration of the company’s 35th anniversary last year.Thestaff volunteers will also engage in fun games with the seniors and host a lunch for them. The elderly beneficiaries will, in turn, put up a few performances and prepare their own healthy version of Lo-Hei.

The highlight of the event will be the arrival of the "God of Fortune" performed byAndrew Lum, Assistant Manager of Corp Comms and CSR, who was born in the Year of the Rat. "It would be interesting for the seniors to know that someone who was born in the year of the Rat is dressed as God of Fortune to usher in the Year of the Rat with them. This will hopefully put a smile on their faces," he said.

Chin Soo Fang, Head of Corporate Communications & CSR Division, said: "It brings us great joy to be back at this centre to spread festive cheer to the seniors again after a successful event last year. This is the first time we are returning to the same place and it is meaningful to see familiar faces and deepen our engagement with them. As always, we are thankful for the continuous support of our sponsors and our volunteers who are ever ready to step forward and go the extra mile for a good cause."
