SPH Gift Of Music Kicks Off Season 3 With SSO In Woodlands

SINGAPORE, 14 March 2007 - If Woodlands residents find that travelling to the Esplanade to enjoy a Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) concert is way too far for them, they would be delighted to know that the SSO will drop in at their neighbourhood this weekend to perform two spectacular concerts – for free!

After an absence of several years, the SSO will return to the town in the north to give a performance at Republic Polytechnic on Friday, March 16, and another one at the open field next to Woodlands MRT Station on Sunday, March 18.

Both concerts are brought to Woodlands residents and Republic Polytechnic students courtesy of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) through its SPH Gift of Music programme. The performances will kick off Season Three of the Gift of Music programme which began in 2005. SPH hopes to draw more young people to this season’s series of performances, hence the theme is "Music for the Young". And for the first time, the popular music series will widen its audience reach to include underprivileged children in charity homes.

At the Republic Polytechnic, the SSO will play easy-listening classics like Tchaikovsky´s much-loved Nutcracker Suite as well as movie and cartoon soundtracks from Harry Potter & the Sorcerer´s Stone and The Sorcerer´s Apprentice in a concert titled "Music & Magic".

For the outdoor concert next to Woodlands MRT Station, the orchestra will put up a "Russian Spectacular", comprising mainly familiar classics by Russian composers and capped by a rousing finale with Tchaikovsky´s ever-popular 1812 Overture.

The conductor-presenter of both concerts will be Singapore´s up-and-coming young conductor Darrell Ang, one of a handful of Singaporeans who have made it to the international stage as an orchestra conductor. Darrell has led the world-renowned St Petersburg Philharmonic and the St Petersburg Opera in Russia. He is also a co-founder of his own orchestra there, the St Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. Last year, he won the Antonio Pedrotti International Competition For Orchestra Conductors in Italy.

The soloist for both Woodlands concerts is violin prodigy Selina Tang, a Secondary 1 student, who has won major prizes here and abroad.

Says conductor Darrell Ang: "As this is my first time conducting concerts in an HDB heartland, I’m looking forward to bringing music to people who might not usually go to an SSO concert. We have designed programmes that comprise popular works that might be familiar to many of them. It is my sincerest wish that the heartlanders come and discover a different but no less exciting form of musical experience. I would also like to introduce violinist Selina Tang. I think she’s the most incredibly gifted young musician Singapore has ever seen."

Admission to both concerts is free. However, due to the limited seating capacity at the Republic Polytechnic, seats will be available on a first-come-first-served basis on March 16. The public is advised to bring floor mats to the outdoor concert on March 18.

Information on other concerts in the SPH Gift of Music 2007 Calendar is available at
