Singapore, 2 February 2021 - More than 20 staff from Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) will be distributing fortune bags (福袋) to the homes of 120 needy elderly living in the Toa Payoh Estate on 9 February 2021. Each fortune bag will contain essential items such as rice, vermicelli, instant coffee, toiletries, masks and hand sanitisers, all of which are donated by sponsors and staff. In addition to the fortune bags, staff volunteers will also be distributing mandarin oranges and red packets to convey new year well wishes to the elderly.
The "SPH Cares with Bags of Love" is an annual event organised by SPH Staff Volunteers Club. This year, it is partnering Care Corner Senior Activity Centre in Toa Payoh. This is also the third consecutive year that SPH has partnered Care Corner Singapore.
Ms Chin Soo Fang, Head of Corporate Communications & CSR, said: "2020 was a challenging year for everyone as the world battles the Covid-19 pandemic. As we step into the new year and with Chinese New Year approaching, we want to spread some festive cheer and uplift the spirits of our elderly friends in Toa Payoh. We hope this event will put a smile on their faces and we also thank our sponsors for their generosity and steadfast support through the years."
Care Corner Singapore is a non-profit organisation established since 1981. It has 38 service points islandwide serving the isolated and disadvantaged in Singapore. Through the provision of social services, they help families in need, youths at risk, lonely seniors, special needs children and children from low-income families. Care Corner Senior Activity Centre at Toa Payoh functions as a community-based drop-in centre, offering holistic eldercare programmes to keep seniors active.
