Singapore, 9 February 2021 - With Covid-19 safety regulations in place that limits visiting and lohei rituals during this Chinese New Year (CNY) period, Lianhe Zaobao and zaobao.sg have lined up a series of exciting engagement tools and content to keep its readers entertained.

This includes the launch of zaobao.sg’s CNY microsite, a Lohei Butler to guide readers through this year’s silent loheis, a docu-series on sending love across borders, CNY sticker packs, and three special CNY shows.

Readers will be given free access to all content on zaobao.sg over the CNY long weekend from Thursday, 11 Feb (eve of CNY) to Sunday, 14 Feb (third day of CNY). Premium content will be made available to all readers, including non-subscribers, on zaobao.sg’s website and mobile application. The premium content will also include the e-papers of Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News.

In addition, for the first time in its 98-year history, Lianhe Zaobao will be publishing a print edition on the first day of Chinese New Year (12 Feb), which is traditionally a non-publication day for the flagship Chinese paper. Besides the usual deliveries to subscribers, Lianhe Zaobao will be available for purchase at selected retail outlets (see Annex).

SPH Chinese Media Group launches “2-in-1 Lohei Butler (Lohei小帮手)”

Those celebrating lohei can now use SPH Chinese Media Group’s (CMG) “Lohei Butler”, an online tool that plays videos and recordings of auspicious cheers when tossing yusheng.

Readers can follow the video guide while doing their own tossing ritual. For users who prefer to add yusheng ingredients at their own pace, a sound menu is available where specific auspicious phrases can be played once they are ready with that step.

“Wish I could come home for CNY” - A docu-series on sending love across borders

Zaobao.sg, Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News, and SPH Radio’s Chinese stations, UFM100.3 and 96.3 Hao FM, have collaborated with Malaysia's Sin Chew Daily on a social media campaign titled "Wish I could come home for CNY".

The campaign, which was launched on 6 Jan, invited members of the public who are separated from their loved ones to share their thoughts on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #好想回家过个年. Three contributors were selected at the end of the campaign on 27 Jan to deliver care packs of their choice to their loved ones in Malaysia. In return, their families were also given the opportunity to send them packages from Malaysia.

Catch the three-episode docu-series jointly produced by SPH CMG NewsHub and Sin Chew Daily on zaobao.sg from 10 Feb, to hear about the contributors’ stories and how they connected with their loved ones despite being apart.

Share your CNY celebrations with zaobao.sg

To encourage readers to celebrate CNY safely this year, zaobao.sg invites readers to post their CNY activities on Facebook or Instagram and share how they are enjoying CNY while adhering to Covid-19 measures. Participants will stand a chance to be featured on zaobao.sg and win attractive prizes.

To participate, readers should mention @zaobaosg on Instagram or @lianhezaobao on Facebook in their posts with the hashtag #安全过年晒出来, while ensuring their accounts are set to ‘Public’. Readers may also email their photographs and captions to the newsroom via zbevents@sph.com.sg.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao said: “Due to the pandemic, the Year of the Ox will be a very different CNY. We foresee that many readers will stay home during the first and second day of CNY instead of heading out or gathering in groups in view of the Covid-19 visiting rules. Lianhe Zaobao has hence decided to make an exception, against the tradition of not publishing on the first day of CNY, to release a special publication. Aside from news, readers can look forward to a variety of content curated for the long weekend to keep them entertained.”

Ms Han Yong May, Editor of SPH’s Chinese Media Group NewsHub, said: “This year’s CNY falls on a long weekend and is supposed to be a good opportunity to get together with our family and friends. Unfortunately, the pandemic is still ongoing, and the situation is far worse in several parts of the world. It’s not the time to let our guard down. Perhaps, it might be a better time for us to keep safe and find joy in reading. There’s a Chinese proverb which means ‘stay still to go far’. In this Year of the Ox, let’s be calm and well-informed to embark on a new journey ahead.”
