Singapore, Monday, 7 May 2007 - Singapore Press Holdings Ltd
(SPH) will be holding its 8th SPH Red Apple Day on May 22 to encourage its
staff, the public and organisations located near its HQ in Toa Payoh to donate
blood in aid of the Bloodbank´s national blood recruitment campaign.
The
event, to be organised together with Beatty Secondary School and Singapore Red
Cross Society (Singapore Red Cross),
will be held at the auditorium of News
Centre in Toa Payoh North between 11am and 5pm.
The Bloodbank requires
about 350 units of blood each day to meet the needs of hospital patients
undergoing critical transplant surgery or suffering from haematological cancers.
The amount marks an increase of 100 units from the required 250 units in 2006.
Although the Bloodbank has sufficient stocks to meet daily needs, the
Singapore Red Cross, as the national blood recruiter,
has to ensure that
there will always be enough stocks to cope with seasonal fluctuations in blood
donations.
SPH launched the Red Apple Day blood drive in 2001 as one of
the company´s ways of contributing to society as a good corporate citizen.
SPH CEO Alan Chan, a regular blood donor in previous SPH Red Apple Days,
says: “We are glad to co-organise the event this year with Beatty Secondary
School, our neighbour in Toa Payoh North. Helping to promote the national blood
drive to youths will help Singapore build the next generation of regular blood
donors.”
Apart from promoting the event in school, Beatty Secondary
School students will spread the message to their parents, and distribute
brochures to residents in Toa Payoh estate.
Other supporters in this
year´s drive are SPH UnionWorks´ Radio 91.3 and Radio 100.3, Mind Your Body (a
health publication of The Straits Times), and Lianhe Wanbao. The event is also
supported by Nestle Singapore and Silver Bird Foods.
The public can come
forward to donate their blood at SPH Red Apple Day on May 22 between 11am and
5pm at News Centre´s auditorium, 1000 Toa Payoh North. Interested companies or
individuals can also pre-register as blood donors by sending an email to
bryan.mah@redcross.org.sg or
call 62200183 ext. 14 before 12pm, May 21.
