Singapore, May 22, 2007 - Three hundred and thirty-five people,
both young and old, supported the 8th SPH Red Apple Day blood donation drive
today (May 22) at Singapore Press Holdings´ News Centre in Toa Payoh
North.
Joining them were 49 students and 15 teachers from Beatty
Secondary School and 14 parents of the students. The rest - 257 - include staff
from Singapore Press Holdings and its subsidiaries, people who live or work near
News Centre and regular blood donors from other estates.
This
year’s
event was organised by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH)
and Beatty Secondary School, which is also located in the same neighbourhood. It
was supported by the Singapore Red Cross Society, the national blood recruiter
for the Bloodbank.
Leading the donors from SPH and Beatty Secondary
School were SPH CEO Alan Chan and Mr Boo Hian Kok, Principal of Beatty Secondary
School, both regular blood donors.
The veteran donors from SPH include
Berita Harian´s Deputy Editor Mohd Zulkifli Rahmat, who gave blood for the 87th
time today and Sub-Editor Ismail Bin Awang, also from Berita Harian, who made
his 77th donation.
Many of the regular donors had been giving their blood
since their army days, like Technician Somu Amurthalingam of Tampines whose
latest donation hit the 103 mark on his donation card.
The young, whose
participation in the national blood drive saw significant growth in recent
years, also showed that they should be able to form the next generation of blood
donors. This was shown in the turnout of more than 100 students from Beatty
Secondary School who either donated their precious pint or helped to usher and
register blood donors.
Three young radio deejays from SPH UnionWorks’
Radio 100.3 - Kenneth Kong, Ken Low and Li Mei - had not only promoted the blood
drive on air - they also contributed their blood, even during a live on-site
broadcast, with one of them interviewing another while blood was being
drawn.
SPH and Beatty Secondary School would like to thank all blood
donors, volunteers and supporters who have helped made the event a
success.
SPH would like to thank our sponsors for the event - Nestle,
Silver Bird Foods and Benelux Produce.
