SPH Presents Premiere Of Arctic Tale To Spread Conservation Message

Singapore, 27 August 2007 - Singapore Press Holdings Ltd (SPH) will be presenting the local premiere of the latest documentary with an eco-message — Arctic Tale — at Golden Village Vivo City on Wednesday (August 29) to help spread the conservation message to tackle global warming.

SPH is hosting nearly 1,000 guests at the screening at 7pm, with the support of the company’s charity foundation, Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, film distributor Festive Films and cinema operator Golden Village. Taking up three cinema halls, the audience will include about 600 SPH employees, who will also take the opportunity to bond with one another after work, and over 300 business partners of SPH. The event is also organised in conjunction with SPH’s 23rd anniversary.

Before the screening of the premiere, SPH Foundation General Manager, Ms Ginney Lim, will present a cheque for $120,000 to Wildlife Conservation Singapore Fund in support of Singapore Zoo’s wildlife conservation programmes, which include the adoption of Inuka The Polar Bear and the successful Proboscis Monkeys breeding programme at the SPH Foundation Conservation Centre, and the Conservation Ambassadors and Buddies programme which train youths in wildlife conservation. The Foundation also supports other conservation groups like Jurong BirdPark, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and Acres. Since 2004, SPH and SPH Foundation have contributed more than S$1 million to conservation efforts in Singapore.

SPH has chosen to support the Singapore premiere of Arctic Tale as it is an entertaining yet educational movie about polar bears and walruses coping with their lives in the north pole where the meltdown as a result of global warming has begun. It is also in line with the company and its Foundation’s conservation initiatives.

Produced by National Geographic Films, which also produced the successful March of the Penguins, and Paramount Classics, Arctic Tale captures the lives of a polar bear cub, Nanu, and a walrus pup, Seela, from birth to maturity over eight years. Beautifully filmed and enlivened with an entertaining soundtrack, the film captures their struggle for survival in an already harsh and icy environment.

Global warming is the larger threat for their future survival as their icebound world melts from underneath them. Narrated by American celebrity singer Queen Latifah, the movie has received good reviews when it was launched in America recently.

Arctic Tale also follows Paramount Classics’s earlier production, An Inconvenient Truth, which raises an alarming global warming message by former US Vice President Al Gore, now a renowned advocate for action on global warming.

Ms Ginney Lim, who is also SPH’s Executive Vice President (Legal and Corporate Communications), says: "With the effects of global warming becoming more widely felt throughout the world, it has become an urgent matter that all individuals and corporations contribute to saving the earth. As a regional media player, SPH would like to be a part of the solution to the climate crisis and management of the earth’s resources. It is also in our interest as an active corporate citizen to help spread the conservation message to all."

Up to 95 per cent of SPH newspapers are printed on recycled newsprint. Other conservation programmes adopted by SPH include the recycling of newspapers, print-outs, paper, drink cans, plastic bottles and printing ink cartridges, energy-saving measures such as reducing electricity and airconditioning usage and, eco-friendly building designs and the extensive greening of SPH News Centre’s rooftop and open spaces.

SPH expects to save at least half a million dollars in its energy bill each year after the implementation of energy-saving measures such as energy-efficient airconditioning chillers recommended by an accredited energy service company.

Following an energy audit by the energy service company at News Centre, Media Centre and Print Centre in 2006, Paragon shopping centre will carry out its energy audit in the new financial year and is expected to make good savings too. The energy audits are in line with the National Environment Agency’s programme to promote eco-smart and energy-efficient practices among building owners.

At News Centre, the installation of a central vacuum cleaning system and the use of double filters for the airconditioning system have improved the indoor air quality to an excellent standard. More importantly, SPH is aware that changing the air filters in the cooling systems regularly can reduce carbon dioxide emission. The roof garden of News Centre with its profusion of plants also helps to keep the building cooler, which means less energy is needed for air conditioning.

SPH buildings have incorporated eco-friendly and energy-smart features in their designs. News Centre, SPH’s headquarters, which began to house staff from 2001, was designed to be eco-friendly during the retrofitting and redevelopment of the old Thomson building. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows were added and an open courtyard was created to receive natural light.

The design of SPH´s first luxurious condominium, Sky@Eleven, expands on this concept. Under construction now, the units will have big picture windows on both sides to allow cross-ventilation and more daylight to stream in. Helping to keep the condo cool will be extremely lush landscaping.

Two weeks ago on August 14, the Public Utilties Board (PUB) awarded SPH with a certificate acknowledging the company’s printing plant, Print Centre, as a "Water-Efficient Building". Print Centre has been adhering to a host of water-saving measures from reducing water usage and flush volume to recycling or reuse of water.

Print Centre also has a water storage tank to collect rainwater which is used for watering plants at the extensive landscaped grounds and for cleaning purposes. In addition, gutters channel rainwater into the water tanks of airconditioning system’s cooling towers. The plant, which is developing a new warehouse, will incorporate bigger windows and additional natural ventilation in its eco-friendly design.
