Hitwise, the world´s leading online competitive intelligence service, has ranked Zaobao.com the No.1 website in the News and Media – Print category for the quarter from April to June 2007. It was also ranked first from January to March this year. The Chinese website currently has more than 5 million page views every day, with 85 per cent from China. It also came up tops for the past two years at the Hitwise Online Performance Awards in the News and Media category.
The Hitwise No.1 Award recognises websites from over 160 industries that are leaders in their industry.
Zaobao.com launched several new features, including columns from Zaobao correspondents and current affairs cartoons early this year. After launching its interactive forum and email alert services in July, its latest feature is a translation-on-demand service launched in August (http://www.zaobao.com/tod.html).
The provision of translation services using the cutting edge translation-on-demand technology is an indication of Zaobao.com’s continual efforts to upgrade its services and provide added value to its readers. Zaobao.com readers can now access real-time English translations of headlines and synopses of China news, China financial news, local news, local business news and commentaries from Lianhe Zaobao daily at the free site.
This service is made available through a
partnership between Lianhe Zaobao and GistXL, a translation technology
developer and service provider. Translations are generated using
advanced language processing technology under the supervision of
experienced translation editors. This model allows rapid and accurate
translation of content.
Mr Zheng Wei, the Online Editor of
Zaobao.com,
said: "Lianhe Zaobao continually seeks to build on its strengths. It
provides exclusive and in-depth political and economic news and
commentaries on China. Zaobao China has already become an important
channel through which readers can understand current developments in
Greater China. Some readers may not be fluent in Chinese and this
translation service will certainly be of help to them."
He
adds: "We believe that government bodies, educational institutions,
listed companies as well as public relations firms will benefit from
our latest translation-on-demand service. We are also exploring the
possibility of launching a tailor-made news track-cum-translation
service for daily translations of content from Lianhe Zaobao and all
other Chinese publications by SPH at the appropriate time. Users will
be able to subscribe to translated content that are of their interest."
