SPH Schools Relay Championships 2008 opens with call for registration

Singapore, 21 January 2008 - Singapore Press Holdings, together with the Singapore Athletics Association, will be holding the annual SPH Schools Relay Championships at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium from March 29 to 30. Sporting talents from secondary and pre-university institutions can register today.

Into its 16th year, the event is the yearly highlight of the school sports calendar. There are 3 divisions: Div A (17-19yrs); Div B (15-16yrs) and Div C (13-14 yrs). The relay distances of 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m will be covered.

Ms Ginney Lim, Executive Vice-President, Legal and Corporate Communications, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), which is the title sponsor of this event, says “SPH is proud to sponsor this unique sports event in Singapore where schools compete exclusively in relay races. Bringing together young exciting talents in the area of athletics, we hope to create a platform that will build a strong sporting culture and encourage the school sports scene to thrive further, in terms of athletes´ participation and crowd support."

President of the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) Mr Loh Lin Kok said, “We are pleased to have the support of SPH for this event. For the last 15 years, this has allowed us to raise the public profile of the sport and the event among schools. It has been crucial to helping SAA to talent-spot and nurture upcoming school athletes to make their grade in the national squads.”

This year´s Championships holds special significance for SPH as it marks the inauguration of the Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy. This will be presented to the most outstanding relay team which successfully breaks an existing school or national record. Named after the late Straits Times Sports Editor who passed away in July 2007, the trophy is a tribute to his efforts as a school teacher who was passionate about sports and helping youths develop and nurture through sports.

Mr Han Fook Kwang, Editor of the Straits Times remarked, “Cheng Khoon was an outstanding sports editor, well regarded and respected by his peers, subordinates and the sporting fraternity. The creation of the Tay Cheng Khoon trophy is a testament to his passion to sports, on and off the field, as a sports editor, sportsman, and sports mentor to young people.”
