SPH names new HQ News Centre

November 11, 2002 - The new headquarters of Singapore Press Holdings Limited at 1000 Toa Payoh North will be officially named News Centre from today.

The name is transferred from its former headquarters at 82 Genting Lane.

"News Centre is almost a household name that has been linked to SPH for many years and we want to retain this special association. Further, the name News Centre also encapsulates the essence of SPH’s core role as a premier news and infotainment provider," said SPH’s Group President Alan Chan.

"Naming our headquarters helps to create an identity for the place, both for the public and our staff."

SPH completed its move to the new headquarters in February this year, bringing together critical operations and corporate services, and 2,300 employees under one modern high-tech roof. For the first time, the Group’s English, Chinese and Malay newspapers are operating together, with the TV news studios being integrated into the print newsrooms, opening a new chapter in journalism.

The new SPH headquarters was officially opened by Mr David Lim, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, on March 8, 2002. At the ceremony, Mr Lim Kim San, Executive Chairman of SPH, sealed a time capsule containing significant artefacts which reflect the present character and substance of SPH. The time capsule will be opened in 10 years’ time.

SPH bought the building, with a gross floor area of 585,000 square feet, for $42 million in November 1998 and spent more than $80 million to build, reconstruct and retrofit it.

The sleek building features a state-of-the art resource centre housing a massive collection of historical information, an auditorium, a rooftop garden, koi pond, courtyards, gym, a basketball and a tennis court and a modern canteen that can accommodate up to 300 people.
