Winners of the 8th Life! Theatre Awards 2008

SINGAPORE, 24 March 2008 – The best of Singapore theatre were honoured tonight at the Life! Theatre Awards, organised by The Straits Times Life!.

Singapore’s arts party of the year was graced by Guest-of-Honour Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, and hosted by actress Pam Oei.

The annual awards recognise the achievements of the Singapore theatre community, for productions staged in the previous year. It was inaugurated in 2001 and is now into its eighth year. Awards in 13 categories were handed out tonight.

A big winner was Cake Theatrical Productions, a three-year old company, which had 14 nominations and took home three awards.

“Nothing”, their kaleidoscopic production about love and death, won Production of the Year, as well as awards for Best Director and Best Multimedia Design which went to Natalie Hennedige and Brian Gothong Tan, respectively.

Wendy Kweh won for Best Actress for her performance in the Singapore Repertory Theatre´s “A Midsummer´s Night Dream”, while the Best Actor gong went to Ramesh Meyyappan for “Gin & Tonic”.

There was a tie in the Best Original Script category – The Necessary Stage´s Haresh Sharma shared the award for his play “Good People” with Ovidia Yu who won for “Hitting (On) Women”. This is Haresh Sharma’s second award in two years.

The partners for the Awards are Music & Movement, Wyndham Estate and Tiger Beer.
