SPH Gift of Music presents SCO at Geylang Serai and VivoCity this weekend

Singapore, 27 May 2008 – It is a double-bill weekend with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) bringing two free community concerts - Melodies of Singapore on May 31 at Geylang Serai and Descendants of the Dragon on June 1 at VivoCity Rooftop Amphitheatre. The concerts are sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings as part of its SPH Gift of Music Series.

Held in the heart of Geylang Serai, Melodies of Singapore showcases the versatility of the SCO and its ability to play a variety of music with multi-cultural appeal. In this performance led by Acting Assistant Conductor Yao Shen Shen, the programme comprises musical pieces which are rich in local flavour.

Music fans will be treated to a wonderful fusion of soulful vocals and delightful Chinese instruments with local singer Hazrul Nizam performing two popular Malay songs, Lafaz Cinta and Kaulah Segalanya. The song Kaulah Segalanya was chosen by Sony Music to be included in a recent compilation album of greatest hit songs from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. A Talentime 2001 runner-up, Hazrul is a familiar face with the local pop scene and his collaboration with the SCO will give these two pop hits a fresh interpretation.

Also included in the repertoire of the Geylang Serai concert are Suriram,a famous Malay love song; Island of Fantasy,a suite of four movements composed by renowned composer Gu Guan Ren, and Singapore Medley,a medley of local favourite tunes.

Gracing the event as Guest-of-Honour at the Geylang Serai concert is Dr Fatimah Lateef, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC and Adviser to Marine Parade GRC GROs.

A second SCO concert will be held the following day (June 1) at the VivoCity Rooftop Amphitheatre. .

Titled Descendants of the Dragon, the concert at VivoCity offers a repertoire of classic Chinese pop tunes and will make an enjoyable stop for shoppers. The popular and upbeat piece Descendants of the Dragon(龙的传人) will capture the attention of the audience with its energy and vigour while the beautiful sound of the “paixiao”, a Chinese wind instrument, will charm you in In that Faraway Place(在那遥远的地方).

Songs by the late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng - May Life Be Eternal(但愿人长久) and Blue Memories(蓝色的思念-邓丽君金曲联奏) will be played, as well as The Sea, My Homeland(大海啊! 我的故乡), the theme song from the classic movie The Sea Beckons.
