SPH enters MICE business with Sphere

Singapore, 4 June, 2008 – Main board-listed Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) today announces its foray into the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) business through a fully owned subsidiary, Sphere Exhibits Pte Ltd.

Sphere, which stands for "SPH Events, Roadshows and Exhibitions", aims to become a leading lifestyle event company in Singapore and the region, to complement its parent company´s media and publishing businesses. It will focus on creating and producing a spectrum of events targeted at mid to high-end consumers.

While SPH has been running different events for years, such as The Straits Times Mind Your Body and Lianhe Zaobao Health and You event, World Book Fair and the CATS Classified Car-nival, Sphere signals an expansion into this area with bigger shows to tap the MICE market.

Sphere’s initial offerings will include innovative and high quality events. To begin with, it will kick start its first event in the food & beverage sector. Sphere intends to give each of its shows a uniquely differentiated theme that will bring entertainment, enrichment and fun to the visitors. The company´s commitment to create memorable events will also result in greater mileage for the exhibitors.

Backed by its parent company, Sphere’s distinct competitive advantage is its ability to leverage on a comprehensive range of media assets which reaches more than 2.9 million people each day. By integrating these extensive and essential marketing tools in its offerings, exhibitors in Sphere´s shows would be assured of better value in enjoying stronger media mileage.

SPH Chief Executive Officer Mr Alan Chan said: “With Sphere, SPH can now offer our clients another platform to market their products and services. This will be backed by our comprehensive range of advertising platforms to give them the widest reach and biggest impact.”

Heading Sphere Exhibit Pte Ltd is Executive Director Mr Chua Wee Phong, who is also the Executive Vice-President of SPH´s Circulation Department. He will be backed by an executive committee made up of experienced members from the Group’s other businesses, including The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, SPH Magazines and Paragon Shopping Centre.

Inaugural Event: "The Food Safari 2008"
Sphere´s first show will be ‘The Food Safari 2008´ at the Suntec Convention Centre in November.

This will be the first Food & Beverage show in Asia to adopt a theme park concept. It will house over 100 exhibitors spanning 2 exhibition halls, and the event will showcase a wide collection of food establishments catering to a diverse Asian palate. Visitors will also be treated to a tantalising mix of beverages at the beverage bars. And for those seeking to stay current with the latest and trendiest in kitchen interiors, this is a show not to be missed.

Unlike regular exhibitions, the Food Safari will be presenting a "star-studded" line-up of celebrity chefs, wine experts and food critics who will guide visitors through an exciting gourmet experience that promises to be a feast for all senses.

Visitors can expect to be part of the Food Safari Trail, which is a fun-filled journey with lots of interesting cuisines to be savoured.

What´s more, they can also witness culinary competitions right at the Safari.

Additional goodies for visitors even after the show
Sphere will also work with the exhibitors to allow visitors to enjoy privileges at the exhibitors’ retail outlets lasting up to one month after the show. This is to stretch their memorable experience beyond the event.

Mr Chua Wee Phong explained, “This celebrity line-up and extended retail arrangements with exhibitors is unique to Sphere´s events, and is set to be a signature feature for all of the company´s shows. It offers an increased value for anyone attending Sphere´s events, and makes the overall experience more exciting for both consumers and exhibitors.”
