SPH Wins 5 Awards at the 10th SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence

Singapore, 5 June 2008 – Singapore Press Holdings’ English flagship daily The Straits Times (ST) came in top for two categories and runner-up in two other categories at the 10th Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence. SPH Magazines’ Her World also bagged an award for Excellence in Magazine Design at the event.

The winners were announced at the Awards presentation gala dinner held at JW Marriott in Hong Kong yesterday. A total of 96 awards were given out for 17 categories.

The Award for Excellence in Special Issue/ Special Section went to ST China Correspondent Sim Chi Yin for her article “Why leave? It´s the only way”, which reported on the social issues of Indonesian women who left home to work in other countries.

ST journalist Theresa Tan picked up the Award for Excellence in Feature Writing for her series of articles on “Hainan´s Missing Girls”, which explored the issue of gender preference and its effect on the communities in Hainan.

Two other ST articles were runner-ups in their respective categories. “Straits Times Special on Climate Change”, written by a team of ST journalists, won an honourable mention under Excellence in Reporting on the Environment for its reports on the lives of those affected by global warming.

ST Artist Prudencio Miel Jr won an honourable mention under the Excellence in Editorial Cartooning category for his cartoons accompanying the articles on Myanmar and its relations with its neighbours. Judges were impressed with his “simple cartoons that convey powerful messages”.

Straits Times editor Han Fook Kwang said: “This is the fifth year running that The Straits Times has received accolades at the SOPA Awards. We’re delighted that these examples of quality journalism practised by the paper have been acknowledged as best in class by our peers in the region."

From SPH Magazines, Her World won the Award for Excellence in Magazine Design for its issues on “The Best of Beauty/ Get your Man /Obsessorise!” Judges had commented on its “lively layout with contemporary, punchy use of photography”.

The Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence was established in 1999 to honour outstanding editorial achievements in both traditional and new media in the region. The Awards received a record 629 entries from publishers across Asia Pacific this year.

In addition, SPH has ventured into outdoor advertising through its wholly-owned subsidiary, SPH MediaBoxOffice Pte Ltd, Singapore´s largest outdoor motion display advertising network media company, and a 35 per cent stake in TOM Outdoor Media Group, a leading outdoor advertising company in China.

SPH owns and manages Paragon, the prime retail and office complex in the heart of Orchard Road, Singapore’s main shopping belt. SPH’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Times Development Pte Ltd, is also developing a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium, Sky@eleven, at Thomson Road.
