Shape Run 2008 Had A Successful Flag-Off

Singapore, 20 July 2008 –SPH Magazines Pte Ltd´s ("SPH Magazines") SHAPE Run 2008, an all-women’s run, began at the Esplanade Bridge early this morning.

At 7.30am, Guest-of-Honour of the event, Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State for National Development and Education, flagged off the Shape Run – a 5km and 10km challenge. She also joined the 5km run after the flag off. The route began at the Esplanade and took runners down Shenton Way before the 10km participants continued on into Marina South.

Shape Run is an enormous hit with female running enthusiasts here. All of its 8,000 spaces were snapped up within 9 days of registration opening on 26 April 08. More than 38% of the runners competed in the tougher 10km category this year, while 62% took up the 5km challenge, which is more suited for novices. In the newly introduced 5km Corporate category this year, there were 47 teams of three to five members per team. Participants were mainly in their 20s and 30s (78%).

The 10km category winner is Suzy Walsham, 34, who clocked in 35 minutes: 18 seconds. She won a cash prize of $1,000 and over $20,000 worth of products. Cheong Tsui Ying, 35, won the 5km race with a time of 19 minutes: 43 seconds. She received $500 cash and $10,000 worth of products. The winning Corporate team is which consists of Loh Yeoh Ling, Tan Chui Chin, Tan Lee Kiaw, Poh Li San and Lee Yem Choo. They walked away with $1,000 cash and $23,500 worth of products.

This year, winners of the individual 5km and 10km categories will also be sponsored to run in Shape Malaysia on 24 August 08, and Shape Thailand in November 08.

SPH Magazines Pte Ltd´s SHAPE, the complete mind & body guide for women, spearheaded Singapore´s first-ever women-only competitive run in 2006, sparking off a trend of women-only running events. This year´s Shape Run 2008 continues its aim to encourage more women to include sports, particularly running, as part of their healthy active lifestyle.

All runners received a Runner´s Kit each. The kit consists of a SHAPE sports bag, Nike T-shirt, bodycare products, health supplements, eye care products, fitness trial classes, spa vouchers, and many other freebies. They will also be presented a personalised certificate with their timing.

Participants ended their run at the Padang where they were treated to exciting stage performances, sports massages, drinks and refreshments, as well as opportunities to sample various merchandise.

The Shape Run 2008 is organised by SHAPE, SPH Magazines Pte Ltd, and presented by Subaru. The event´s co-presenter is nike women and is supported by the Singapore Sports Council. Official partners are AIBI, CITISPA, Dunlopillo, H-Two-O, Kellogg´s, Marigold Yoghurt, Parkway Health, Starhub, Sunplay, VITAGEN Collagen and True Yoga. Its partners in sports are Singapore Pools and Singapore Totalisator Board, while the carnival´s venue partner is Marina Square.
