SPH Web Portals Favoured By Netizens

SPH’s network of websites such as, HardwareZone, ST701 and STOMP established as leaders in their respective categories by Hitwise and Nielsen Online

Singapore, 27 November 2008 - Singapore Press Holdings’ websites and portals have come up tops in 2 recent reports released by Nielsen Online and the international online research specialist, Hitwise. The results reaffirm SPH’s position as a major player in new media.

Hitwise Top 10 Awards

In the Hitwise Top 10 Awards for the period July to September 2008, SPH took top spots in the following 9 categories. : News and Media – Print : Shopping and Classifieds – Classifieds : Business and Finance – Stocks and Shares : Business and Finance – Business Information : Food and Beverage – Lifestyle and Reference : News and Media – IT Media : Computers and Internet – Hardware : Computer & Internet – Social Networking & Forums : Lifestyle – Blogs and Personal Websites

In particular, SPH websites dominated the News and Media – Print category, taking 9 out of the top 10 rankings.
The online edition of SPH’s Chinese flagship newspaper Lianhe Zaobao ( retained its top ranking in the News and Media – Print category. has a large following both locally and overseas. It enjoys 4 million page views daily and 7 million unique visitors each month.

ST701 (, SPH’s e-marketplace for jobs, property, cars, products and services took a commanding lead in the Shopping and Classifieds – Classifieds section. ST701’s market share for the category is now close to 40 per cent.

Commenting on the site’s increasing popularity among online shoppers and job seekers, Ms Elsie Chua, Executive Vice-President for Classifieds in SPH’s Marketing Division, said: "In ST701, users have found the right combination of content and ease of use. We are glad and pride ourselves for meeting our users’ expectations. However, we will not sit on our laurels but will continue to improve our services for our customers."

SPH Magazines’ HardwareZone held on to its number 1 spot in 3 categories. HardwareZone has consistently dominated the following categories, namely, News and Media – IT Media; Computers and Internet – Hardware; and Computer & Internet – Social Networking & Forum. Its dominance in the News and Media – IT Media section is exceptionally high, garnering close to 94 per cent of the market share.

These were the same 3 categories in which HardwareZone was ranked overall top for the annual Hitwise Number 1 Award in 2007. has successfully attracted more than just technology enthusiasts. Over the last few years, it has amassed a community of 300,000 members contributing to various interests of discussion. In Singapore alone, statistics stand at 1 million unique visitors with over 35 million pageviews.

AsiaOne and Business Times Online
SPH’s AsiaOne news portal ( and Business Times Online ( also did well.

In particular, was ranked number 1 in the Business and Finance – Stocks and Shares as well as the Business and Finance – Business Information categories.

AsiaOne’s food portal retained its top spot for the second quarter since it was launched in May this year. It now has a market share of more than 20 per cent in the Food and Beverage – Lifestyle and Reference category.

The health sections on AsiaOne and were ranked second and third in the Health and Medical - Information category.

Nielsen Online Weekly Top 10 Sites

In the Weekly Top 10 Sites Audited by Nielsen Online (3 Nov - 9 Nov 2008), SPH portals occupied six of the top 10 placings for local sites based on domestic page impressions. As a group, SPH’s network of websites and portals was ranked Singapore’s top.
