Inaugural Men’s Health Urbanathlon enjoys unqualified success

1,500 runners have a blast, stage set for 2011 event.

Singapore, 31 January 2010 – The first-ever Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2010, an endurance run organised by SPH Magazines and sports event management company HiVelocity, received the thumbs-up from both participants and sponsors as it enjoyed a successful flag-off on January 31, 2010. Urbanathletes praised the race’s innovative formula, in which runners traversed eight obstacles over a 12.5km route along the Singapore River and Marina Promenade in their bid for glory.

Mr Raymond Goh, Associate Group Editor at SPH Magazines, which publishes Men’s Health Singapore, described the event as “a hit”. “Today’s turnout is testament to the fact that the Men’s Health Urbanathlon is a race like no other – the obstacles offered enough of a challenge to make it a novel, not to mention fun, experience for serious and casual runners alike.”

The Men’s Health Urbanathlon was first launched in New York in 2006, and made its way to Chicago and the United Kingdom soon after. In Singapore, runners found their strength, stamina and agility tested to the utmost as they navigated obstacles such as ‘Wall Street’ (a 1.5m high wall), ‘Down and Dirty’ (a 10m long mud pit) and ‘Corporate Ladder’ (a flight of 99 steps).

Seventy-nine per cent of the 1,500 male competitors signed up in the Individual category, while 21 per cent hooked up with a buddy to compete in the Team category. Nine winners across the two categories shared in prizes worth over $34,000. As a token of thanks for their support, every participant received a complimentary race pack worth over $250.

Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mayor, North East District, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports & Ministry of Transport, graced the event as Guest of Honour, flagging off the first wave of racers at 7.30am.

Taking first place in the Individual category was 28 year-old Jason Lawrence with a timing of 47 minutes 10 seconds. The New Zealander won over $9,600 worth of prizes, including air tickets to Siem Reap (worth $3,100), an Oris watch (worth over $2,100) and a Nikon camera (worth over $1,200). Mark Williams, a 39 year-old British, clinched second place with a finish time of 48 minutes 36 seconds, while Singaporean Lexxus Tan, 38, clocked 50 mins 49 seconds to round up the top three.

Jason Lawrence was a double winner at the event, as he and his team mate Colin Tung, 21, also took first prize in the Team category by clocking a combined total time of 1 hour 38 minutes and 05 seconds. The team won over $8,000 worth of prizes. In second place were Tay Lip Kee, 23, and Fang Jian Yong, 21, with a timing of 1 hour 48 minutes and 09 seconds. Tan Yeow Chung and Eng Yew Kiang, aged 35 and 29 respectively, came in third at 1 hour 52 minutes and 06 seconds.

Jason, who was very happy to win the inaugural Men’s Health Urbanathlon, said after the race: “There are a lot of female-only running events in Singapore, and the Men’s Health Urbanathlon is a great chance for guys to have a race they can call their own.”

“The obstacles added a fun, challenging twist to the race. I will definitely be taking part in the Men’s Health Urbanathlon again next year,” he added.

The excitement did not end after the race at the Finish Point – participants got the chance to get a hose-down from the hot Men’s Health babes, wash up, partake of drinks and food, and get their hands on limited edition Urbanathlon apparel.

“The success of the first Men’s Health Urbanathlon proves that there is a place for new and innovative events in Singapore’s sports calendar,” said Mr Eugene Low, Deputy Managing Director, SPH Magazines. “We hope to capitalize on this achievement to organise an even better Urbanathlon event for both runners and sponsors in 2011.”

The Men’s Health Urbanathlon was presented by Berocca; and sponsored by Adidas, Asia Pacific Breweries’ Get Your Sexy Back initiative, L’Oreal Men Expert, Nikon, Oris, Polar and Redken. Event partners were Capello Loft For Men, Durex, 100 Plus, Marina Square and True Fitness.
