Media veterans Jin Wei-Tsun and Qian Gang speak at the Eminent Speakers Series 2010

Singapore, 27 May 2010 --- The Eminent Speakers Series returns with two media veterans in Asia to address the role of media in mainland China and Taiwan.

Mr Jin Wei-Tsun and Mr Qian Gang will speak at the forum this Sunday, 30 May 2010, at the Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre Theatre on the topic “Role of Media in Social Change: A Cross-Strait Perspective".

The Eminent Speakers Series is jointly organised by Lianhe Zaobao and Business China, and supported by the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Foundation. Back for the third year, the series invites prominent personalities who are highly regarded authorities in their respective fields to share their unique perspectives and insights on a broad range of topics, including current affairs, politics, business, economics, media, culture and the arts.

Past eminent speakers include Professor Justin Lin Yifu, Chief Economist of The World Bank, Mr Yau Lop Poon, Editor-in-Chief of Yazhou Zhoukan and Mr Nan Fangshuo, Taiwan’s leading political commentator.

The talk this Sunday is chaired by Mr Lim Jim Koon, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao.

Profile of Mr Qian Gang
Mr Qian Gang is a veteran in the China media industry. Formerly the managing editor of Southern Weekend (南方周末), Mr Qian is now the Director of China Media Project, Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong.

Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Mr Qian’s secondary school education was disrupted during the Cultural Revolution. In 1969, he joined the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) where he continued his studies. In 1979, he became a war journalist with PLA Daily. He graduated from the PLA Academy of Arts in 1986 and published his award-winning work “The Great China Earthquake” in the same year. Mr Qian is also a well-known non-fiction writer in China in the 1980s. After discharging from the army, he pioneered a few periodicals including Disaster Reduction in China, Lifeweek and produced News Probe, a weekly investigative news magazine that was aired on China Central Television.

Other works by Mr Qian include Chinese Educational Mission Students (collaboration with Hu Jincao, Chung Hwa Book (HK) Co, Beijing Contemporary China Press), Li Hongzhang and the Imperial Navy (Chung Hwa Book (HK) Co), Reports on Old News (Chung Hwa Book (H.K.) Co), Chinese Media in Political Reforms (Cosmos Book Ltd).

Profile of Mr Jin Wei-Tsun
Mr Jin Wei-Tsun was born in Taiwan in 1952. His family was originally from Wenzhou, Zhejiang. He holds a degree in History and Politics from the National Chengchi University, Taiwan. In 1983, he went to New York University to pursue an MBA.

Mr Jin was the founder of Business Weekly Media Group which is a magazine publishing house and a publishing consultant company. Business Weekly is the first title published by the group. Business Weekly is currently the leading title among Taiwan's financial magazines. It is also the most widely-circulated magazine in Taiwan.

Mr Jin has 30 years of media experience including his previous employment stints at China Times and Commonwealth Magazine. He is currently the President of Symbiosis Taiwan Co, Ltd where he is committed to promoting lifelong learning.

As a well-known columnist who holds unique views in areas ranging from political and economic issues, world trends to philosophy of life, he is often invited to speak at forums in Taiwan and other parts of the world.

Mr Jin is also actively involved in community work. He was the Chairman of the Magazines Business Association of Taipei, which promotes the development of magazines in Taiwan and the Executive Director of the United Way of Taiwan.
